In an effort to abolish ‘elevator’ interpretations of the jazz genre, the Adil Johan Quartet (AJQ) strives to provide an enlightened, informed albeit entertaining take on the staples of jazz, funk, RnB and pop repertoire. The intention is to play music from the heart while blurring the artificial boundaries of musical genres that separate the serious from the fun, the elitist from the street, the blacks from the whites, the pops from the rocks, etc…
As most popular music today is rooted in jazz, AJQ operates from a jazz perspective to reinterpret non-jazz songs while ‘unjazzifying’ regular jazz standards. AJQ is Terrence Liew on keyboard and piano; the brain behind the arrangements and reinterpretations of AJQ’s pop covers, the young and relentlessly virtuosic Hiro on bass, the multi-talented and ever sensitive drummer Steve Naris Nanda on drums, and Adil Johan as saxophonist, songwriter and bandleader.
